How to Read and Understand Your Auto Insurance Policy

Auto insurance policies are dense legal documents, but you don’t need a law degree to understand yours. Learning to navigate the key sections will help you know exactly what you’re paying for and what’s covered.

The Six Main Sections

Most auto policies follow a standard structure: the declarations page, definitions section, insuring agreement, conditions, exclusions, and endorsements. Each section serves a specific purpose in defining your coverage.

The declarations page is your quick reference — it summarizes your coverage, limits, deductibles, and premiums. The insuring agreement explains exactly what the company promises to cover.

Understanding Exclusions

Exclusions are situations your policy specifically does not cover. Common exclusions include intentional damage, using your car for commercial purposes (like rideshare driving without proper coverage), and racing.

Reading the exclusions section carefully can prevent unpleasant surprises when you file a claim.

Endorsements and Riders

Endorsements (also called riders) are modifications to the standard policy. They can add coverage (like rental car reimbursement or roadside assistance) or sometimes restrict it.

Review your endorsements to make sure they reflect the coverage you requested and that you’re not paying for add-ons you don’t need.
